MORE OF OUR WORK
Find a selection of our scientific productions and educational resources below. We are excited to share with you our different axes of research on pain management and welfare from the Steagall Laboratory. We are constantly updating this section.
PAIN ASSESSMENT
An adequate assessment of pain using validated instruments is paramount for treating pain.
A series of original research studies were conducted to understand behaviors indicative of acute pain in dogs and cats.
-
Unesp-Botucatu pain scale - Multiligual validation (Short Form Version)
-
Unesp-Botucatu pain scale - Clinical Validation (Short Form Version)
-
Agreement among students and veterinarians on pain assessment in dogs and cats - 2017
-
Interobserver agreement for postoperative pain assessment in cats - 2017
-
Unesp-Botucatu pain scale for cats in French language - 2017
NOVEL COST-EFFECTIVE ANESTHETIC AND ANALGESIC TECHNIQUES
Studies performed to understand the clinical applicability of anesthetic and analgesic techniques in dogs and cats including the use of intraperitoneal analgesia, buprenorphine, gabapentin and other analgesic drugs.
-
Opioid-free vs. opioid-sparing anesthetic technique in cats undergoing ovariohysterectomy - 2022
-
Anatomical, sonographic, and CT study of TAP block in cat cadavers - 2022
-
Intraperitoneal bupivacaine alone or with dexmedetomidine in cats: efficacy – 2019
-
Intraperitoneal bupivacaine in cats: pharmacokinetics – 2016
DENTAL PAIN
Surprisingly, very little is known about dental pain in cats. These cutting-edge studies present specific behaviors before and after dental extractions in cats. We showed that dental care with tooth extractions can produce severe pain in cats requiring prolonged analgesic administration.
NEUROPATHIC PAIN
Neuropathic pain can severely affect the quality of life of animals. Studies are being performed in dogs and cats to better understand this condition.
PAIN MANAGEMENT SURVEYS
Using questionnaires, we asked pet owners from Canada, United States and Hong Kong about their perceptions and opinions related to surgical pain, perioperative pain management and anesthesia in small animals.
